Pre-Elite Gap Year & Post-Graduate Training Program

Spend a year training in one of the premier rowing destinations in the United States with Sarasota Crew.

Our Pre-Elite Training Program is designed for athletes who want to dedicate a year to rowing, improve their performance, and continue developing as athletes, all while maintaining the flexibility to pursue work, education, or other opportunities. The program is an excellent option for high school graduates taking a gap year, as well as recently graduated college athletes looking for an additional year of high-level training. The minimum commitment is 3 months but we highly recommend committing more time than that to gain the most out of the experience.

Train Year-Round at Two Elite Rowing Locations

The program provides athletes with access to two exceptional rowing environments:

Nathan Benderson Park – Home to the USRowing National team and a regular training location for Sarasota Crew, as well as a training destination for many college programs. Training at Benderson Park gives athletes the opportunity to row on the same water used by some of the best rowers in the world and to be surrounded by a strong competitive rowing community.

The Florida Intercoastal Waterway – Sarasota Crew's Osprey-area locations provide access to endless kilometers of beautiful, rowable water. Athletes can train year-round while enjoying a unique Florida environment.

Having access to both locations gives athletes the ability to choose the environment that best fits their training each day. Unlike many rowing destinations, Florida provides year-round outdoor rowing without the seasonal water and weather limitations found in colder parts of the country. Land training space is also available at both locations (ergs, bergs, weights, etc.)

A Flexible Training Environment

Athletes receive an individualized training plan and guidance from Sarasota Crew coaches, with coaching provided during select training sessions. At the same time, the program is designed to give athletes the independence to train on their own schedule.

This combination allows athletes to take ownership of their training while still having access to experienced coaches, facilities, equipment, and a high-level rowing environment.

The program includes:

  • A 12-month training program running August through August

  • Access to both Sarasota Crew rowing locations

  • Access to Nathan Benderson Park

  • Access to Sarasota Crew's Osprey/Florida Intercoastal rowing locations

  • Boat storage for one single (1x)

  • Access to equipment when available

  • Erg, weight and land training equipment

  • Individualized training guidance

  • Coaching and supervised training opportunities

  • The opportunity to train alongside high-level athletes and visiting programs

  • Opportunities Beyond Training

For athletes interested in gaining paid work and coaching experience, Sarasota Crew may also have opportunities to assist with our middle school and elementary rowing programs. Additional opportunities may be available within our competitive high school program for the right candidates.

These opportunities can provide valuable coaching experience while allowing athletes to remain connected to the rowing community and supplement their training year with meaningful work.

Housing Opportunities

Limited free housing is available for qualified athletes participating in the program. Housing availability is limited and is not guaranteed, so athletes interested in this option should contact Sarasota Crew as early as possible. We have a house next to one of our boathouse locations in Osprey that is available for housing.

Stay Connected to the College Rowing Community

Sarasota is also an excellent location for athletes who are continuing to pursue collegiate rowing opportunities. College rowing programs regularly travel to Sarasota and other parts of Florida for winter training trips, creating opportunities for athletes to train in an environment where they can meet and speak with college coaches.

For athletes who are still exploring their collegiate options, training in Sarasota can provide valuable exposure to the broader rowing community.

Program Cost

The program fee is month to month with a 3-month commitment needed. It is $1,675 per month and includes housing and all above. We hope that athletes spend the year with us allowing athletes to make Sarasota their training base for an entire year.

Sarasota Crew youth program alumni receive a reduced program rate. Please contact the Sarasota Crew office for current pricing, housing availability, and additional information.

Who Is This Program For?

This program may be a good fit for:
